D Day: 02/12/2005 - 09/12/2005
Destination: Vietnam - Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)
Flight: TR328 Tiger Airways
Day 1:
Found ourselves a simple and cosy room long Pham Ngu Lao. US$6 per head. Quite costly compared to BKK but it was ok.
First day was kinda lost. Still trying to find our way around. Traffic was scary. But the people are friendly.

Day 2:
Did some exploring around the area with my Rough Guide to Vietnam. Visited Ho Chi Minh Art Museum and a flea market that sells old remnants of the Vietnam War. Amongst them are piles of uniforms, dog tags, helmets, zippos and IDs of American GIs and Viet Cong who were KIA... Couldnt help but think of the huge number of innocent people who were sacrificed...

Day 3:
Bought 4 tickets to a nearby beach, Mui Me, 4 hrs away. Great place. Great beach that stretches 10km. Great friendly people. Great sun, sand and sea!

Day 4:
Just lazing and hanging out by the beach. Getting a great tann (and burnt) and jogging along the beach is a really nice feeing... Food there was great. Esp the sea food.

Day 5:
Took a bus back to Ho Chi Minh City. Bus broke down along the way and we were stuck in the midst of a highway...
Day 6:
Back in Ho Chi Minh City. Checked into the same guest house, Ngoc Dang. Visited the Ho Chi Minh City Museum, War Remnants Museum and the Reunification Palace. The War Remnants Museum struck me the most. Pictures and images of the war illustrated the cruelty of US army. Plenty of propaganda and nationalistic feelings around. The cruelty of the war and esp the Americans were magnified in the photos. All the black and white photos were heart wrenching. Which includes the Pulitzer Prize Award photo showing a Vietnamese woman carry her children to safety in the river. Videos of the aftermath of the war was sickening. Videos of deformities in Vietnamese children due to the effects of Dioxin and napalm used by the US army kept running. By the end of the day, I felt nauseated and i have lost my appetite for the day.

Day 6:
A trip down to the Cu Chi Tunnel further increased my admiration for the Viet Congs. 25 years of war and over 200km of tunneling was enough to give them a medal for their determination and their loyalty to the country.

Day 7:
Did some last minute shopping and flew home.

Experiencing the Vietnamese way of live and their culture was an invaluable learning experience for me. Walking through aisles and aisles of war photos filled gallery made me realise that images of the Vietman War were still very fresh in the Vietnamese. Merely 30 years ago since the war ended. A communist poster is erected at every corner of the street. The Vietman Flag flies proudly in every household. Cruelties of US army during the war are 'promoted' in every war museum. Do the Vietmanese still despise the Americans?
" Nearly 3 million Vietnamese were killed and 4 millions others injured. Over 58,000 American armymen died in the war. Yet, long term consequences have not been completely determined in the Vietnam War. In retrospect, it is not for inciting hatred; but just for learning lessons from history: human beings will not tolerate such a disaster happening again. Neither in Vietnam nor anywhere on our planet."
Now, we think...what's going on in Bagdad now?
